Chelsea FC strengthens People Operations with senior appointment

About

Chelsea FC is one of the most recognised football clubs in the world, with a major domestic and international profile across men’s and women’s football.

The club required a Head of People Operations to help lead HR Operations, Data and Payroll, while shaping the operational direction of the People function. The appointment formed part of a wider move to modernise People Operations, improve governance, strengthen processes and build greater confidence in people data.

Challenge

Chelsea FC needed to appoint into a specialist area of the People function. HR Operations requires a different skill set to business partnering, which typically focuses on strategic talent advisory; this role instead functions as the architect and custodian of the HR infrastructure, a foundational, execution-focused leadership position designed to build stability, scalability and effective risk management, with a stronger focus on governance, systems, data, processes and operational delivery.

The club needed someone with experience in a large, multi-site organisation, ideally within a fast-moving environment. The role required a person who could bring structure and confidence to the function, while remaining comfortable with the pace and pressure of a leading sports organisation.

The People department had also experienced a period of change, which made cultural fit particularly important. Chelsea needed someone with the technical knowledge to lead HR Operations, but also the character, resilience and judgement to work effectively in an evolving environment.

The club had previously advertised the role directly but had not secured the right appointment, when Chelsea FC reached out for help with the search, EISG were delighted to help.

Solution

EISG’s Senior Consultant Harry Trussler led the search, building a targeted search around the specialist requirements of the role. The focus was on identifying people with proven HR Operations experience, strong people data knowledge and the ability to work across complex, high-profile organisations.

The search looked beyond football and into industries with transferable pace, scale and operational complexity. Entertainment, media, sports broadcasting and retail were prioritised because they offered exposure to large workforces, multi-site environments, customer-facing cultures and fast-changing business needs.

A public advert was also used to support the search, but the main focus remained proactive headhunting. This helped EISG reach people who were not actively looking but could bring the right blend of technical expertise, operational leadership and cultural fit.

Each person was assessed beyond their CV. Harry held detailed video interviews using complex questions to understand motivation, character, working style and suitability for Chelsea’s environment.

The shortlist was delivered in person, talking the client through the strengths of each profile, and the rationale behind the final recommendations.

“The search needed someone who understood People Operations at scale, but also someone who could thrive in the pace and profile of Chelsea FC. The strongest shortlist came from looking carefully at transferable environments where governance, systems and culture all matter.”

Outcome

Chelsea FC appointed a Head of People Operations within 8 weeks of the brief being agreed.

The appointed individual brought strong experience from a sports broadcaster known for operating in a fast-moving, high-pressure and commercially driven environment. This background gave Chelsea FC confidence that the selected person understood the pace of sport, the need for operational rigour and the importance of building trusted systems and processes.

The search delivered a focused shortlist from a niche talent pool, with 52 individuals approached and 24 screened to identify candidates with the right HR Operations expertise and adaptability, eventually narrowing the search down to two exceptional candidates.

The result was a senior appointment with the experience to strengthen governance, enhance processes, improve systems and build more reliable people data across the club’s People function.
