AFC Wimbledon appoints Managing Director to drive commercial growth and stadium strategy.
Overview
AFC Wimbledon, a club with a unique and community-driven identity, created a new Managing Director role following its return to Plough Lane, and the brand new Cherry Red Records Stadium – a purpose-built long-awaited modern stadium. The position was central to leading the Club’s business, brand and stadium operations, while driving long-term commercial growth and operational excellence.
Challenge
As part of a new leadership structure, AFC Wimbledon required a Managing Director to oversee business operations and deliver strategic growth. A key priority was identifying a candidate capable of monetising the stadium, which will host over forty football and rugby events each year alongside conferences, meetings, exhibitions and private celebrations.
The role required a balance of commercial expertise, leadership credibility and the ability to operate within a distinctive ownership model.
Solution
EISG delivered a targeted executive search, identifying senior leaders with experience across football, commercial growth and operational leadership. The process focused on candidates capable of driving revenue through sponsorship, events and new business development, while overseeing complex stadium operations.
The search was led by Davey Blofield, whose experience in senior placements and understanding of the football landscape enabled a focused and efficient process. A headhunting approach ensured access to high-quality passive candidates aligned to both the commercial objectives and organisational structure.
“This appointment was about securing leadership that could deliver growth while aligning with the Club’s long-term strategy.” – Davey Blofield, EISG
Outcome
A successful appointment was made within 10 weeks, securing a candidate with extensive football experience and a clear strategic vision. The individual is positioned to lead the Club’s executive team, enhance commercial performance and maximise the stadium’s potential as a revenue-generating asset
