We’re exclusively retained on behalf of a leading Championship football club to appoint their new Finance Director.
A business critical appointment, the successful candidate with lead a team of four and ideally have prior experience within football and thus aware of impending challenges such as wage cap and used to the financial fair play framework and seasonal nature of cash flow in elite sport.
The role suits someone commercially savvy, currently operating at FD/CFO level, and appropriately qualified (ACA, ACCA, CIMA).
You’ll manage a Finance Controller, Management Accountant and two Finance Assistants and will work closely with the club’s ownership group, board, First Team Manager and various heads of department.
From an external perspective you’ll pick up relationships with player agents, lawyers, the English Football League (EFL) along with various auditors and tax / legal advisers.
Actively contributing to the leadership of the business as a key board member, liaising closely with shareholders as appropriate
Supporting the development and implementation of the Club’s strategy, offering commercial and operational insight to aid decision making
Membership of the Club’s “Football Forum”, providing detailed financial input in supporting and challenging all key decisions in particular with regard to the terms of new player contracts and transfer agreements
Strategic planning and forecasting
Leading the financial planning, budgeting, cash management and financial forecasting of the Club, ensuring short and long-term objectives are appropriately financed
Providing support and challenge to all departments in the development and execution of the Club’s strategic plans to ensure that budgets are adhered to and the long-term financial viability of the club is not put at risk
Producing medium term (3-4 years) cashflow forecasts, including scenario planning and sensitivity analysis (e.g. change in divisional status), to support strategic decision making
Maintaining a detailed first team “squad cost model”, providing analysis of the financial implications of potential transfers in/out
Governance and regulation
Ensuring that the company complies with the financial aspects of all relevant legislation and governance including all EFL
Ensuring compliance with HMRC requirements including the payment of all taxes on time and in accordance with relevant legislation
Oversee the annual audit process and the production of the annual financial statements
Controls and processes
Providing financial assurance on the integrity of the financial aspects of the business
Identifying and managing financial risks and opportunities across all areas of the Club
Driving through improvements in controls and processes across the Club generally
Working with the Financial Controller to ensure the ongoing development and operation of finance systems and management reports that allow for sound decision-making
Responsibility for monthly payroll, the processing of which is administered in-house
Supporting the Football department, recruitment team and Club secretary with all player contracts and transfer agreements, liaising with the Club’s external lawyers and other advisers as required
Ensuring high-quality and detailed management accounts are compiled and distributed to the management team in a timely manner
Providing financial analysis, focusing on long-term returns to shareholders, in support of capex investment decisions and other strategic initiatives
Interfacing with lenders and other external parties
